Forty remnants leaned against a wall. Half of them carry a strip of tape with a job number that closed a year ago. A fabricator needs a 40 by 22 piece of Calacatta, walks the yard, tilts slabs for twenty minutes, gives up, and cuts into a full slab instead. That is a several-hundred-dollar decision made because a four-cent label was missing.
Thermal label stock in the US comes in 4 x 2 inches, and the printers that eat it run at either 203 or 300 dots per inch. Get that number wrong and the printer helpfully rescales your label to roughly two thirds of its size, off center, with the text clipped at the edge. Stone Project renders every label at the exact DPI of the printer you name, so 4 x 2 comes out 4 x 2 and the barcode scans on the first try.
The designer is the print engine. There is no second code path that reformats your layout on the way to the paper, which is why the preview never lies. Nudge a field two millimeters in the editor and it moves two millimeters on the label. Drag a corner to resize, rotate in quarter turns, bring an element to the front — then hit test print and hold the result up against the screen.
The QR is the part that pays for itself. Scan a tag with your phone camera and the piece opens: dimensions, thickness, photos, price, where it lives. Walking the yard becomes a scanning job instead of a memory test, and a fabricator can confirm the right remnant without walking back to the office to ask.
New material gets tagged where it lands. Receive a purchase order and every slab on it becomes an inventory piece; print its tag from that same screen before it ever goes on the rack. Cut a slab down and the offcut becomes a remnant with its own code and its own tag, so the piece you just created is findable this afternoon instead of next quarter.
What changes when you use it
Any thermal label printer that speaks ZPL, which covers Zebra and the ZPL-compatible clones. The ready-made layouts were built for a Zebra ZD421 at 300 DPI on 4 x 2 inch stock. If your printer runs at 203 DPI, set the template to 203 and the label is rendered for that head instead. Don't have a thermal printer yet? Print the same label as a PDF on the office printer and tape it on until one arrives.
Yes. Select several pieces in your inventory list and send them to the print screen together, one tag per piece in a single pass. Set a copies count if you want the same tag on both ends of a slab.
Whatever the guy at the rack needs to read. Pull any of the piece's own fields (code, title, stone type, category, color, finish, dimensions, thickness, price, date added, your company name), add a QR code or a barcode, drop in your logo, and place your own text and shapes. Prices print in your currency and dates in your locale.
Both, on purpose. A signed-in team member lands on the full piece record and can edit it. Anyone else who scans it, like a customer standing in your yard, gets the read-only view of that slab: material, color, dimensions, photos. Nothing else in your account opens from the tag, and changing a piece still requires a signed-in account with inventory permission.
