This is a quick estimate that assumes the pieces pack perfectly. Defects, vein matching and piece shapes change the real count.
Want the exact number, not an estimate?
Draw the job in Stone Project, pick the stone and lay the pieces out on the real slabs. You get the slab count, the remnant left over and the quote for the customer from the same drawing.

How many slabs do I need for a kitchen countertop?
Add up the square feet of every piece, add a waste allowance (10 to 20 percent is typical, more with a strong vein or many small pieces), and divide by the area of one slab. This calculator does that and rounds up to whole slabs.
How do I calculate countertop square footage?
Multiply length by width in inches for each piece, divide by 144, and add the pieces together. Backsplash and islands count as separate pieces.
Why is the real slab count sometimes higher than the estimate?
The estimate assumes pieces pack perfectly. Real layouts lose area to slab defects, vein matching and piece shapes, so a layout on the actual slab is the only exact answer.
What size is a countertop slab?
It varies by material and supplier: standard slabs are often around 120 by 55 to 126 by 63 inches and jumbo slabs around 130 by 65 inches or larger. Enter the size your supplier quotes.
